If it is at all possible, visiting the Garden Route whilst on a tailor made holiday to South Africa will surely make your trip. You can easily combine it with a stay in Cape Town or an Eastern Cape safari, allowing you to experience the country as a whole. Or it can be the central focus of your South Africa travels, and you can enjoy the many activities and beautiful scenery the Garden Route offers.

World’s Highest Bungee Jump

If you fancy yourself as something of an adrenaline junky, perhaps hurtling headfirst off Bloukrans Bridge will appeal to you. The Garden Route boasts the highest commercial bungee in the world, with a 216m drop down into the gorge below. And you can purchase video footage of your courageous act as proof of the excitement you experienced on your South Africa travels.

Situated in the Garden Route, you can expect magnificent scenery surrounding the bridge, and while you may not appreciate it as you hurtle towards the ground, you can sit and gaze out over the gorge to remedy your nerves after your plunge.

Exploring the Forest

The Garden Route’s indigenous forest is one of the most magical in the world, and taking some time to explore it is essential when on a luxury holiday in South Africa. In the Tsitsikamma Forest just outside Knysna, you will find the world’s largest tree, which, surrounded by other giant trunks, does not appear to be very much larger than its peers! But it is worth seeing nonetheless.

Bird lovers will appreciate the diverse and abundant bird population within the forest, with brightly coloured birds such as the Knysna Lourie standing out in contrast to the lush green forest foliage. Other wildlife populations thrive within the forest too, with monkeys swinging high in the tree tops, baboons traipsing around in their troupes, and snakes slithering through the branches. Elephants used to roam freely through this forest, although they have not been spotted in many years. But if you’re very lucky, you may just catch a glimpse of a trunk beneath the treetops while on your South Africa travels.

If you’re hesitant to venture too far into the wild, the Elephant Sanctuary and Monkeyland will afford you the opportunity to meet the interesting creatures up close on your luxury holiday in South Africa.

Whale Watching

A less energetic way to spend your days on tailor made South Africa holidays is to sit back, relax, and enjoy watching whales, dolphins and even a shark or two, as they playfully go about their business in the sparkling Indian Ocean. The best time to go for whale watching is between June and October. During these months, Southern Right and Humpback whales come to the waters of the Garden Route to breed.

If you are staying in Plettenberg Bay, you can take a trip out in a boat to get a closer view of the abundant marine life, where whales, dolphins, seals and seabirds will be waiting to greet your on your luxury South Africa holiday.
