One thing about Singaporeans and this country in general is the simple fact that we love our food and we have developed a taste for the exotic, the flavorful and the spicy – three important things when it comes to describing anything as distinctly Asian. Right smack in the centre of the region and a hub for all things traditional, contemporary and futuristic, Singapore has become the centre piece, the piece de resistance of food and culture for gastronomites all over the world.

This is clearly shown at the many Asian food fairs and Asian food exhibitions that are held several times during the year, with some of them even overlapping each other and held within variable distances to one another. This is testament to the voracious appetite that we have for the wonderful world of food, and it is not limited to just severe quantities and heaps of servings upon our plate. We are also keen on discovery, new recipes, fantastic new ways of preparing food and secret little concoctions from corners of the Asian region we never knew about. Each bite is a new discovery, an archaeology of the amazing and delicious – we the Indiana Jones of the eating world will go to great lengths to taste something new and something special.

A typical Asian food exhibition I think is poorly named, for it cannot describe the dynamic and interactive environments that are present during these sensory shows of smell, taste, touch and sight. You do not just get to see the food, you are part of the cooking process, you get to speak to the chefs, ask them their secrets and sample some of the best food they have to offer. You hear the sizzle and smell the sauce – whet your appetite again and again as condiments of the world and spices from all corners unite in perfect harmony as they transform mere food into art. Tradition, culture and practices all show in the preparation and the presentation of the food. When you take a bite into the dishes, you are biting of a piece of hundreds of years of culture mixed in with even ore years of evolution and contemporary perspective.

Asian food fairs are also not limited to the food alone; there are usually traditional dances, shows and performances by some of the regions best. Enjoy ethnic performances by the established acts as well as fresh and new amateurs. You will be guaranteed a whale of a time at an Asian food exhibition and you will leave with more than just a full stomach and a fiery tongue. You will leave with memories you will take with you, recipes you will be dying to try out and an excitement and keen enthusiasm looking forward to the next Asian food exhibition.

Bring your family, bring your friends and bring the person you love – it is an unforgettable experience and only at a food fest will you leave fully satisfied and wanting more; all at the same time.
