As cultured a nation as one could hope to find, it is no wonder than many Italians are quite contented to take their holidays at home. Italy has wonderful variety, from the rustic northern regions of Tuscany and Umbria, where good food and wine is accompanied by excellent views, to the Italian island of Sicily replete with beaches and breathtaking landscapes. There is something for everyone in Italy and here s a brief travel guide of some highlights.
The North West
Milan is one of the chicest cities in Europe and fashionistas and party animals will find plenty to keep them entertained. Milan has dazzling cat walk shows and some of the liveliest bars and clubs you will experience. Car hire Italy is a great way to get around Milan as this big city can seem imposing. You can also use your vehicle to drive to Lake Como. The Italian Lake District is one of the regions which attracts as many local tourists as it does foreigners and there is enough fresh air for everyone to enjoy. Everywhere you will see the influence of the old Roman inhabitants, especially in the town of Como itself.
Tuscany

Siena still gets crowded in the summer and if you prefer peace and quiet avoid the main horse race for which it is famous, Il Palio. Although Il Palio is not tourist orientated pretty much everything else in Siena is. Siena was incredibly wealthy during the Middle Ages before it was defeated by Florence. The remains of its wealth are still on show for everyone to see and you cannot fail to be impressed by the Duomo, the Palazzo del Campo and the Palazzo Pubblico.
Rome
Of course no trip to Italy would be complete without visiting the capital. Rome is also the capital of the Lazio region of Italy and is located towards the west of the country. This location means that Rome even has a beach resort, the Lidi di Ostia.
Rome is known as the Eternal city and remains a place of romance. It was once the seat of the powerful Roman Empire so it has an incredibly well preserved sense of history. You will want to see Rome s landmarks and there are many of them. The Colosseum is always impressive; the Vatican City is a must for any Catholic travellers while the entire historic centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Rome divides nicely into ancient and modern. The Colosseo region is the heart of Ancient Rome where you can see the Pantheon, the Roman Forums and the market of Trajan. In the modern centre there are shopping opportunities and restaurants galore. To get off the beaten trail visit places such as the Jewish quarter which have charming architecture and cute bars as well as the Aventino Testacchio with its hidden surprises.
Southern Italy
Historians and archaeologists will want to see the ruins of Pompeii which inspired so much classical literature. Beach bodies might head to the UNESCO listed Almafi coast which has stunning scenery. City dwellers may prefer to soak up the atmosphere of Naples.
