Milan is a sophisticated city known for its fashion, shopping and football clubs. Although some people think this industrial giant in the north of Italy is soulless, Milan is in fact a city which rewards those who can afford to spend time there. Milan is not obviously geared to tourism and this serious city is home to the Italian stock exchange. Popular brands such as Armani and Versace were initially discovered on the Milan catwalks and are now worn across the globe. Shoe shopping in Milan is something that every woman will want to do and there are high end pairs located in the various boutiques.
Not only can you get great clothes in boutiques which have come straight off the catwalk but there is a wonderful opportunity to shop outdoors. Markets such as the Ripi di Porta Ticinese have been going for years and are a favourite hunting ground for antiques dealers who are looking for bargains.
They are not the only people who invest in Milan. Italian president Silvio Berlusconi runs the AC Milan football club which has had some of the world s greatest players on its books including Marco van Basten, Kaka and David Beckham. The club has won many honours over the years but always faces stiff competition from rivals Inter Milan. Bizarrely both clubs play in the same stadium and a visit to the San Siro is a requisite for anyone who wants to find out how passionate the locals here really are.

The best time of year to visit Milan depends on what you are looking for. In the summer the city is less crowded as many of the locals head to the beach so this can be a relaxing introduction to Milan. However the summer months are quite hot. The city can also get very cold in the winter.
