In France you will find the city of Ajaccio. This city is located in the prefecture of the department of Corse du Sud in the Corsican region. The city is considered to be the capital of the region. The city can be found on the west coast of Corsica. It is 210 miles southeast of Marseille. The city lies in a sheltered area at the foot of some wooded hills that can be seen on the northern shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio. The city’s harbor can be found to the east of the original citadel which was located on a hill which overlooked the harbor. These are the Torra di Castelluchju, the Torra di Capu di Fenu and the Torra di a Parata. You will find all of these towers located in the Îles Sanguinaires archipel. From the cathedral you can explore the house where Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769. Here in this house which is well preserved you will be able to see his childhood memorabilia. Likewise his association with the city can be seen on various statues which can be seen in the city as well as streets which have been named after him.
Another interesting place that you might wish to visit, lies to the south west of the peninsula. Here you will find the Place Bonaparte. This quarter of the city is usually the winter visitors haunt. This is the area where visitors to the city come attracted by the mild climate of the town. The peninsula is home to the citadel and the Citadel jetty. As you explore this city of Ajaccio you will find an interesting statue of Napoleon Bonaparte dressed in Roman clothing. This is a very impressive monument and well worth taking a photograph.
For some interesting information about Ajaccio you may want to visit the Musée FESCH. This museum was built upon the demands of Cardinal FESCH who was the uncle of Bonaparte. It was originally built to accommodate the Arts and Sciences Institute. However at the time of his death the Cardinal bequeathed to the town more than a 1000 paintings. This museum is considered to be the second most important museum in France after the Louvre with regards to Italian paintings.
